Introduction:

The research efforts of the Endocrine, Cardiovascular & Metabolic Research group have been dedicated to (i) study the role and mechanism of action of gastro-intestinal hormones in energy and glucose homeostasis, (ii) development of innovative medical and surgical treatments for obesity and type 2 diabetes, through the optimization of the surgical techniques used in the clinical setting towards improved outcomes, use of surgical animal models of bariatric surgery and implementation of novel pharmacological approaches for obesity by developing an anti-ghrelin vaccine, (iii) study the role of obesity and metabolic syndrome in prostate cancer progression and the pathways leading to adrenal cancer, since obesity and metabolic syndrome have been recently linked to the increased risk of endocrine related cancer.

The Endocrine, Cardiovascular & Metabolic Research group has established formal research collaborations with several national and laboratories. Research on the role of gastrointestinal in energy homeostasis has been performed in collaboration with the Department of Metabolic Medicine at Imperial College, London. Clinical and translational research on the mechanisms of weight loss and diabetes control after bariatric surgery is being performed by enrolling patients recruited from the Obesity Surgery Outpatient Clinic of Hospital de São Sebastião, Centro Hospitalar de Entre Douro e Vouga, and complemented by the use of rodent models of experimental bariatric surgery, performed at Centro de Cirurgia Experimental Avançada (CCEA) by the same group of surgeons that are responsible for human patients care. The development of an anti-ghrelin vaccine has been performed with the collaboration of Professor Polly Roy, from the Department of Pathogen Molecular Biology, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK and Professor Felipe Casanueva from Molecular Endocrinology Department of University Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Research in endocrine related cancer field is being developed in collaboration with Professor Pignatelli from IPATIMUP and Professor Gavin Vinson from Queen Mary, University of London, UK.



Aims:

The specific goals of this group area are:

  • To study the role and mechanism of action of gastro-intestinal hormones in energy and glucose homeostasis which can have potential implications in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity.

  • To develop innovative medical and surgical treatments for obesity and type 2 diabetes, through the optimization of bariatric surgery procedures towards improved metabolic outcomes and pursue the development of pharmacological approaches for obesity treatment with the development of an anti-ghrelin vaccine.

  • To study the role of obesity and metabolic syndrome in activating molecular pathways leading to cancer progression in order to identify novel molecular markers for disease diagnosis and treatment targets.
